Aqua Net & Koffin Kats!

I’ve been pretty lazy about doing my hair lately, mostly because my headaches have been so bad I just haven’t felt like doing anything with it… and because my wild curls have a life of their own- BUT, since I’ve got my car (1957 Savoy) back on the road I’m feeling more motivated to look the part! So today I got out the Aqua Net, put on Koffin Kats, and ratted and teased a beehive inspired do, then added the Bettlejuice hair clips I love so much (from Karloff Kouture on Etsy)!  And here is the result of today’s, Rockabilly/Psychobilly- or should I just say- Rockabelle Hairstyle! 

 Maybe I should show up early to pick up my son from school today, just to embarrass him- he’s always saying “Mom, do you have to do your hair like that, everyone is staring at you.”  They may stare or think I’m weird, but all the girls say how much they love it! (Besides, I’m not one to care if others don’t like it!)

The Perfect Hair Accessory for a Fabulous Rockabilly Look!

I am beyond happy and excited to share to 2 super awesome finds with you today (thanks to the wonderful vintage lovely Jessica at Chronically Vintage).  The first is another great Rockabilly/Vintage Blog:   HauteRockabillyFashionista -who is a lover of Vintage and Rockabilly fashion, makeup, hairstyles, music, and dancing- and blogs about it all!  It was on this fun Rockabilly blog that the gorgeous Vintage Snoods were shared.  The snoods are custom handmade in a variety of colors by  ArtheliasAttic on Etsy.  I am so pleased that both  Haute Rockabilly Fashionista  and Chronically Vintage decided to blog about  Arthelia’s Attic Snoods because I have been wanting on so badly and have been unlucky in finding one.  Below are some of the colors the Snood comes in (Super cute product images on her store site also!):

When it comes to hair I believe “bigger is better”!  I love vintage and Rockabilly hairstyles, especially in bright colors. Unfortunately my naturally curly hair gets fried super easily, so the more I color it and use blow dryers and curling irons to style it- the more fried it gets… so I have come up with a “cheater” way of doing my victory rolls where I just twist my hair into a roll and pin it in place. Bobby pins are THE KEY- and I can’t leave out the importance of hairspray, especially since my hair is fried into multi-layers and half would stick out or fall out without it! When I want my victory rolls to look really good and big I use a large curling iron. Using curlers on wet hair, until it dries, is the best way to get the curl to stay in shape- your hair will NOT go limp with wet to dry curlers like it will with hot curlers or a curling iron!! But once again… because my hair is fried into multi-layers, it doesn’t all stay in the curlers and it takes so long to dry it is usually still wet the next morning (regardless of the type of curler).  All that said- I refuse to give up on fabulous styles like these, I just may have to put in extra time and effort to achieve the hairstyles these rockabilly beauties have!

Simple Beehive

     I love beehives and I think bigger is better, but I don’t always have time to go big, bold, and fun. This my fast and simple Rockabilly style beehive do. I leave a little bangs down and grab a big section of hair from the top (just not low on the sides) and hold it straight up. I lightly spray the front and back with hairspray. Then I take my brush and back-comb the back of the section I’m holding. Next I take my smaller bumpit hair piece and put it right at the base of the hair I just back combed and wiggle it slightly forward and back, then right and left to really get it to stay. I gently place the section of hair (I’m still holding up) over the bumpit and spray it with hairspray before I let go. I let go and shape it. Then I spray it again. The picture on the left I did nothing with the front of my hair for a very simple, more natural looking beehive. In the other pictures I pulled the front bangs sections back behind my ears and added a flower to one side. I use the bumpit because it saves me a lot of time and a lot of back-combing on my over fried hair. There are so many ways to do beehives and I will continue to take pictures as I do them!

Rockabelle Victory Rolls

     I spent a lot of time watching you tube tutorials on how to do victory rolls and other Rockabilly hairstyles. There were 2 problems I kept running into- 1. none of them have hair like me and 2. it all looked easier than it was.  My hair is naturally curly, very frizzy, fried, tangles super easy, and I don’t have bangs. The first several times I tried to do victory rolls I hated how it looked and basically ended up throwing the brush and giving up. I am happy to say I have figured out the trick, the trick doing victory rolls in even the most unmanagable hair like mine– HAIRSPRAY!!  “When” you spray your hair is probably the most important part, then would be “how much” you spray your hair. Now for a step by step break down:

You will need aerosol hairspray, a lot of bobby pins (color depends on the color of your hair), and a large (2-2 1/2″) curling iron.

Section or part your hair the way you like it, I have mine with a bigger section to my right because that’s how it feels right for me.

Brush or smooth out the first section, my hair is too nappy to brush when dry so I just run my fingers in it slightly to smooth out any curls that may be trying to stick out.

While holding this section out and up (diagnally) SPRAY IT WITH HAIRSPRAY! Spray the front, back, and ends. Don’t drench it, just get enough on it to keep the hair together and keep it from falling while curling it. Hold it there for a minute so the hairspray is pretty dry- otherwise your hair will stick to the curling iron when you go to unroll it.

Lightly put the curling iron on your section of hair about half way up, but don’t let it close tightly utnil you get close to the ends or you will have creases in your hair. Once you get the curling iron as close to the ends as you can, curl down and towards the back of your hair. Stop about half way and lightly spray the hair you haven’t curled yet, then continue the curl with the curling iron until it is barely touching your head. Lightly spray again.

Hold the curling iron there just long enough to make the curl (depends on how good your curling iron is). DO NOT unroll the curling iron, instead you want to loosen your pull on the curl (not so close or tight to your head), continuously open and close the curling iron to loosen the grip as you very carefully pull the curling iron from the curl, using your free hand to keep the curl in its place.

Hold it in place with one hand and spray it with the other. This is where you can make any small adjustments in position.

Set it in place with bobby pins. I start with one in the front then one in the back, so the back doesn’t frizz or fall out. Then take another bobby pin and put it next to one you already placed, but this time cross it over the other one- this helps to lock them in place.

One more spray down with the hairspray to make sure it stays and your done!- Well at least I am. Many of you will have to use that big curling iron and curl the back, but since my hair is curly, I don’t like taking any more time on it than I already do, and because I don’t want my fried hair to fall off (again…)- I am done at that point! It does take practice but I hope this can help save someone a little frustration. Also, the hairstyle on my “About Rockabelle Bombshell” page- I call my “CHEATER ROLLS” because those are just twisted and pinned when I’m in a hurry or not at home.
