1950’s Icon Nightstand

Vintage Nightstand + Chalk Paint + 50’s Icons = AWESOMENESS!

A friend of mine has done some work on my 57 Savoy and never asks for anything in return. I knew I wanted to do something for him and his wife, and since they are also huge fans of the Fabulous 50’s, and our likes are so similar,  I set out to find a vintage piece I could upcycle Rockabilly style!

I saw a cute end table he got for his wife when he posted the pictures on Facebook, then some antique cabinets that had belonged to his grandma that he commented on saying he was trying to decide on a color to paint them.  I found an adorable vintage nightstand with a lot of potential- it was exactly the type of vintage piece I was hoping to find, now I just had the important task of picking a color that would match their other furniture. So the next time I saw him as we were picking up our kids from school, I asked him if he decided what color to paint those antique cabine. I  he got, and he said he wants to go with a teal chalk paint.  I remembered the end table in his Fb pictures was done in the teal chalk paint so I went to his pictures and saved the image of it to my phone so I could compare it to the Annie Sloan chalk paint colors when I went to order it, to make sure I got the right color.

While I waited for the paint to arrive I went on my Rockabilly Legends board and my Starlets board on Pinterest and saved a bunch of awesome images of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Marilyn Monroe, and James Dean to my computer.  I printed them onto card stock paper and cut them out. When the chalk paint arrived I went to town! I did a few coats to get it to look how I wanted, waited for it to be completely dry, then put on the Annie Sloan clear wax. The next day I mod podged the top of the nightstand with the 50’s icon pictures- which took a while to get them to fit, and cut some, and move some…  Then did the same for the bottom shelf the next day.  The day after that I did one more good thick layer of mod podge. The last thing I needed to do was find a handle to put on it. I went to the antique store and to my luck there happened to be one I thought would go perfectly with the vintage nightstand.  I wanted the handle to stand out, and to go with the black and white images of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Cash,  and James Dean- so I painted it black satin. Of coarse none of the screws I had fit!  So the last thing I did was go to the hardware store and get some…and….done!!

I brought it by their house while they were at work and left it by the front door.  Then text him to let him know I made something for them and left it by the door.  I was SO happy and relieved when his wife called and told me she loved it!

Rockabilly Legends and Oldies but Goodies

Vinyl Collection

Sometimes in my treasure hunting adventures I am lucky enough to find great collectibles.  I was very excited when I came across an older couple selling off their record collection, and even more excited when I saw that some of them are Rockabilly Legends! It’s not very often that I find Elvis or Buddy Holly anything, and to find their records along with other great Rockabilly artists and bands like Jerry Lee Lewis and the Stray Cats made for a very exciting day! I keep some of the records for decorations, add them to my collection, or make things out of them (which I will eventually get around to making a post about), and the few I can talk myself into parting with I list in my Etsy store Rockabilly Rehab!

Elvis Presley’s “It Hurts Me”

Less Popular but Most Loved…by Me!

Elvis Presley

I don’t believe there is a single Elvis song I don’t LOVE- he is just a beautiful, musical masterpiece! No one ever has, or ever will compare (as most will agree).  Some of the songs not heard often are my favorites, and in hoping they make all of you as happy as they make me when I hear them I am sharing 3 of my favorites-

Elvis Presley “It Hurts Me”

Love, Love, Love this song!

Elvis Presley “You Don’t Know Me”

From my favorite Elvis movie “Clambake”

Elvis Presley “Mean Woman Blues”

Fun song, shows part of the movie too! Mr. “Sideburns” with “jumpin beans in his jeans”!

Rockabilly Wedding Cakes!- Part 1

A few years ago when I started looking for Rockabilly cake ideas it was hard to find any- now that our Rockabilly Kulture is expanding beyond car shows and our clothing, and thanks to great websites and photo sharing sites like flickr, there are many more Rockabilly cakes to draw inspiration from for your own wedding.  I have found so many I will have to split them up into different posts of different styles within the Rockabilly Kulture: Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Dia de los Muertos, Burlesque, and Traditional Vintage/Retro.  There are so many great themes to get ideas from,  from red and black cakes to Elvis and Rock’n’Roll cakes, tattoo flash to pinups, leopard, zebra, polka dots, guitars, record players, skulls, spider webs, poker chips, dice, cards, classic cars, corsets, zombies, and everything in between.  I love these cakes and enjoy sharing them!

Favorite Classics of Viva Las Vegas 15

I Can Never Get Enough!

Ok- so maybe my life will never be an Elvis musical and maybe I will never go back in time and experience the 50’s like I dreamed of doing when I was a kid- but I will continue to day dream and experience as much of those “Happy Days” as I can through car shows and Rockabilly events like Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend.  I love the feeling of being surrounded by colored victory rolls and Betty Page bangs, greasers and pompadors, tattoos and pinstriping, bandanas and parasols, swing dresses and petticoats, Rockabilly music, and of coarse– the classic cars!  There is something so emotionally seductive about the classic cars- the curves, the sharp edges of tail fins, the shape of the lights, the big shinny grilles, the moldings, the emblems, the white wall tires, the bigger engines, the huge trunks, and the beautiful large steering wheels….  There is something so magnetic and wonderful about classic cars, maybe because they bring up feelings of more simple and happy times, or because they represent an iconic and exciting era? Regardless of the reasons for the exciting effect they have- I can never get enough of the classic cars these big events bring! Here are some of the many great classics from this year’s Viva Las Vegas, Rockabilly Weekend:

My Love Affair with Elvis!

I have been in love with Elvis Presley as far back as I can remember. Even at a young age I was completely mesmerized by him. There is something so unique and so special about his voice that it has always touched me in an emotional way that I can’t even describe (corny, yes, but true)! I often times find myself very still and speechless when I’m watching him on videos or listening to his music. Everything about him his wonderful: his voice, his looks, his hair, his moves, his smile- he has it all, and it’s all those things together that made him what he was (the BEST). I have yet to discover anyone that can effect me the way Elvis always has. Unfortunately he died 3 days after I was born so I will have to live through the jealousy I feel of knowing my mom and dad got to see him and I never could.

When I was 13 my mom bought me my first Elvis collectors plate for Christmas and I’ve been collecting Elvis things ever since. When I was 15 I went to an Elvis (impersonator) show in Las Vegas with my grandparents. We got to sit in the front row along the stage and “Elvis” sang to me and took his polk-dot scarf off and wrapped it around my neck! It was almost real to me. So many times I have wished I could go back to the 50’s and see Elvis live. When I turned 19 my friends and family gave me an Elvis themed surprise party- it was awesome. They had the Elvis movie “Clambake” playing on all the tv’s in the room, and to this day that is still my favorite Elvis movie. My friend Brandon loved Elvis also and he gave me Elvis collectors stamps. He was the first friend I had that dressed and looked like Elvis, so naturally I adored him. “Love Me Tender” was the first Elvis movie I got, which was also the first movie Elvis made.

I love everything and anything Elvis. I collect plates, music boxes, calendars, posters, pictures, music, movies (which most need to be updated because they are VHS!), dolls, clocks, and whatever else I come across. My dream is to go to Graceland and be surrounded by Elvis impersonators! My cousin lives in Tennessee now and I hope to have him take me to Graceland sometime next year, which I will of course post pictures and blog about. Until then I will continue to drink my morning coffee in my Elvis mugs so every day starts with something good.
