It’s a Big Hair & Beetlejuice kind of day!

Aqua Net & Koffin Kats!

I’ve been pretty lazy about doing my hair lately, mostly because my headaches have been so bad I just haven’t felt like doing anything with it… and because my wild curls have a life of their own- BUT, since I’ve got my car (1957 Savoy) back on the road I’m feeling more motivated to look the part! So today I got out the Aqua Net, put on Koffin Kats, and ratted and teased a beehive inspired do, then added the Bettlejuice hair clips I love so much (from Karloff Kouture on Etsy)!  And here is the result of today’s, Rockabilly/Psychobilly- or should I just say- Rockabelle Hairstyle!

Maybe I should show up early to pick up my son from school today, just to embarrass him- he’s always saying “Mom, do you have to do your hair like that, everyone is staring at you.”  They may stare or think I’m weird, but all the girls say how much they love it! (Besides, I’m not one to care if others don’t like it!)

Polka Dots, Leopard, and Gingham…Oh My!!

Pinky Pinups

In between DIY projects I’ve spent a lot of time on Etsy lately- mostly looking for Halloween items for my kids costumes… but of coarse I can’t help but browse my favorite shops while I’m there.  I’ve had Pinky Pinups on my fashion radar for a while and was excited to see all the cute Rockabilly clothing they have in some of my favorite prints- polka dots, leopard, and gingham.  The hardest part is deciding which one to get first!

More Pinstriping!

Pinstriping is another love of mine.  I would be happy with pinstripes on just about everything- from my car to my shoes, to my furniture.  I keep tethering between painting my 1957 Savoy black satin, with a red top, and shiny red and black pin stripes (I especially love red spider web pinstripes on flat/satin black!)… or pink.  I think I have decided on going pink for this car because it is my first classic and I want it to be a total “SHE” ride!!  BUT, since I plan on having more classics in the future, I will absolutely have one painted black satin with pinstripes.  I am lucky enough to have a good friend that is a pinstriper and fellow Kustom Kulture, Rockabilly lover- Bear, of Nukesville Kustoms.  I get to see his work often and I love it!  To see more Nukesville Kustoms pinstriping you can check out my previous post   https://rockabellebombshell.wordpress.com/2012/03/19/nukesville-kustoms-pinstriping/ ‎  or find him on Facebook- Nukesville Kustoms by Bear

Mannequin Makeover

Gingham and Polka Dots!

Rockabilly mannequin makeover

I bought this mannequin to use when taking pictures for my Etsy shop and the plain look of it got to me.  Since it usually sits by my desk in the living room I wanted to make it more my style!   I ripped off the fabric and foam and mod podged pieces of gingham and polka dot (2 of my favorite Rockabilly prints) fabric in it’s place. It was more time consuming than I had anticipated,  but I’m happy with it!

DIY Rockabilly Style Shirt!

Upcycled Tank Top

DIY Rockabilly shirt

What I Used:

Plain black tank top (Walmart $3.89 I believe), bias, ribbon, straight pins, thread, 2 buttons, and a sewing machine.

supplies for diy shirt

Steps to make DIY tank top:

1.  I used black and white gingham bias (because it’s one of my favorite Rockabilly patterns/prints!) and pinned it around the neck line, starting in the middle on the back side.

diy tank top

2. Press, removing horizontal pins as you go.

3. Sew closer to the inside of the tank top, not the outside edge, starting from the middle of the back side, removing your pins as you come to each one.  Make sure you back-stitch where you start and finish.

4. Press it again.

5.  Use a loose straight stitch, 1/4 from the edge, and sew down the entire length of ribbon (I cut my ribbon 2x as long as the piece of bias I used).  Do Not back stitch!  Hold the bottom thread in one hand and pull the ribbon the opposite direction with your other hand to gather, for the ruffled look.

6.  When you have the ruffled look you want in your ribbon, pin it in place leaving enough space for your buttons.

7.  Sew the ribbon to the tank top starting in the center on the back side, removing the pins as you get to them.

8.  Hand sew the 2 buttons down the center….. and DONE!!

Perfect Summer Time Rockabilly Halter Tops!

Red Pepper Boutique

This week I was lucky enough to discover Red Pepper Boutique on Etsy and I am in halter top heaven! Where I live in California a good part of the summer is over 100 degrees.  When it is that dang hot outside I don’t like to wear sleeves or stiff restricting clothing, I want to wear as little as possible and be as comfortable as I possibly can.  Red Pepper Boutique has amazingly cute halter tops in a variety of our favorite Rockabilly patterns- Gingham, nautical, polka dots, leopard, and solids. Not only are the styles super cute and sexy- they’re Cotton!!  Red Pepper Boutique‘s Rockabilly halter tops are made to order, which is a bonus for anyone who’s measurements don’t land within any of the typical size categories!  Soft, comfortable, stretchy, cool, cute, sexy, made to order, Rockabilly halter tops= Red Pepper Boutique.  Perfect, Perfect, Perfect!!!

Rockabilly Legends and Oldies but Goodies

Vinyl Collection

Sometimes in my treasure hunting adventures I am lucky enough to find great collectibles.  I was very excited when I came across an older couple selling off their record collection, and even more excited when I saw that some of them are Rockabilly Legends! It’s not very often that I find Elvis or Buddy Holly anything, and to find their records along with other great Rockabilly artists and bands like Jerry Lee Lewis and the Stray Cats made for a very exciting day! I keep some of the records for decorations, add them to my collection, or make things out of them (which I will eventually get around to making a post about), and the few I can talk myself into parting with I list in my Etsy store Rockabilly Rehab!

Rockabilly Meets Burlesque…

Home Decor

I have a really hard time finding home decor that matches my style and personality.  When I couldn’t find a lamp shade to go with my red and black with zebra print bedroom I decided to make my own.  I loved the result- it is much more “me” than anything I saw in stores.  Since then I have been making similar home decor items for other people who run into the same problem.  Inspired by my own bedroom theme, I call this a wonderful blend of Rockabilly and Burlesque!
